One day I was walking through the streets of Chippendale and came across a warehouse conversion. The building used to be a sweets factory for Menthol-Lyptus, but in 2004 it was transformed into 14 apartments. Many of the original features were maintained, including wooden and steel production lines used to carry sweets to the packaging areas.
The building's residents had created a community spirit that's similar to the larger one of Chippendale, where you can find veggie gardens lining the footpaths. There was a communal bookcase where people could deposit or loan books. And on the rooftop was their own joint herb and veggie garden.
One of the apartments, which Chris Warnes shot for Warnes & Walton, appeared in a recent issue of Real Living magazine.
