Mary Shackman is well known to those in fashion circles as for most of her career she's worked as a textile designer. Clients have included Carla Zampatti, Sportsgirl and Nicola Finetti. But she's also a successful artist. In 2009 she was a finalist in the Gallipoli Prize, the Waverley Art Prize and the Blake Art Prize. Last year she exhibited at the Charles Hewitt Gallery in Sydney.
Which five words best describe you? Artistic, interested in everything, observer, sensitive, focussed.
How did you get your career start and what path have you taken since? Went to the National Arts School ESTC at 16 to study fine arts, turned to textile designing and printing. Stopped in 1990 and went back to painting
What’s the best lesson you’ve learnt along the way? Keep doing what you love.
What’s been your best decision? To go it alone.
Who inspires you? Myself.
What are you passionate about? Art and fashion.
Which person, living or dead, would you most like to meet? Too many.
What dream do you still want to fulfil? To have a sell-out exhibition.
What are you reading? Harbour by John Ajvide Lindqvist - he wrote Let the right one in.
